So this guy hired sex workers. Some of whom were under 18. Nowhere do we find info about their precise ages. The prostitutes were not identified and did not testify. They gave no depositions. It's literally impossible to judge if any harm was done to anyone. But sex-phobic hysteria demands that we scream about the bogey man of the week, the all pervasive but undefined, undefinable, and essentially meaningless term "trafficking"

Did anyone see the news from Vienna, where six teenagers committed long term sexual abuse of a 29 year old woman?

Teens are not children. They are not innocent. They are not only victims. They are also perpetrators. Americans putting themselves into a mindset where teenagers are mentally only little kids is so wrong on so many levels and creates a myriad of problems. Our laws need to take reality into account. Otherwise we're gonna keep seeing all sorts of bizarre injustices.

I grew up at a time when everybody knew that teens were young adults. Nobody even questioned that. There was no hysteria about teens having sex. A lot of things were terrible back then, but our society was able to give a level of basic respect to the 14-20 crowd which is now completely lost.

So for me, it's just an obvious truth. It took a little time to figure out how the mainstream worldview got so fucked up, but it's basically this: in the 80s Stranger Danger panic consumed people's minds. It was irrational, but it set the stage for very fearful overprotective parenting. That then morphed into Sex Predator panic, and pedophiles-are-everywhere hysteria. (which happened mostly in the USA where you could at one time get tens of thousands of dollars if you claimed that the priest or scout leader you fooled around with once "traumatized" you) As helicopter parenting became more pervasive the ages at which sons and daughters were sheltered and "protected" got higher and higher. Lenore Skenazy wrote an excellent book about how fearful parents are making everything worse. She mostly focuses on pre-pubescents, but the trend is the same. It's a paradigm that says young = stupid = needs protection = must be stripped of all rights and responsibilities. Then by preventing the young from gaining experience, the young actually do get worse at doing things, and it all becomes a vicious circle. We end up creating the very problem we set out to solve.--!!--

Johnathan Haidt and many others (myself included. I share some guilt here) in good faith spread fear about a wave of teen depression in the US during the advent of the smart phone era.

We were wrong. The data was skewed by a couple of odd changes in the way info about emergency room visits got put into databases.

We should still be concerned about the health and well-being of our youth. but there is no huge mental health crisis among them. and Haidt's theory that smart phones were causing the non-existent crisis are discredited.

I still firmly believe that his and Lenore Skenazy's efforts to promote childhood independence are positive. We should keep fighting against needless and harmful infantilization of our sons and daughters.

A confluence of events provided the factors for the paradigm shift.

In the 80s the media went wild for 2 EXTREMELY RARE cases of child abduction by a stranger. Adam Walsh and Etan Patz (a while later Jacob Wetterling). Kids were on milk cartons. TV news got much better ratings when they covered scary stories, involving blood and death. Heart-wrenching stories with adorable blond 6 year old victims sold like hotcakes. So Stranger Danger Panic emerged.

TV personalities got rich and famous by terrifying the population even more. Their shtick required that the victim be innocent and vulnerable. So they constantly used words like "defenseless victim", "impressionable minor", "naive child", and "inexperienced teen"

Big sexual abuse lawsuits against the Boy Scouts and the Catholic Church popularized the idea that child sex abuse is extremely harmful and extremely common. Neither of those things is true. Well-meaning people conflated the concepts of minor and child so they could inflate statistics. Teens can, of course, consent to sex, they've been doing it for all of human history, but admitting that would mean that you couldn't prosecute or sue for millions of $$$. So well-meaning but teen-phobic sex-phobic Puritans invented the mantra "minors can't consent". They have to repeat it constantly, because it is obviously not true. --!!--

One of the most fascinating things in the last few decades of U.S. politics is the total reversal of the sex-positive vs sex-negative positions of the two main parties.

In the 80s and 90s the Republicans were the party of Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority. The sex-phobic Puritan idiots were all in the GOP.

The sex-positive enjoy life and don't suppress healthy natural desires party was the Democrats.

In the 90s the Rs tried desperately to beat Bill Clinton over the head with his sex scandals, and while some voters were disgusted by his dalliance with Lewinsky, overall he kinda made it so sex scandals don't matter.

Now as we enter 2025 the opposite is true. Seems like every R in tarnation has half a dozen sex scandals and the Dems just won't shut up about them, and those Rs just keep winning elections. Maybe establishing a new slut-shaming left-wing Moral Majority wasn't a good idea. --!!--

If we were to stipulate the absurd notion that under 25s cannot make rational decisions because the all-important pre-frontal cortex is not "fully developed"...

...how should that impact our society?

What changes should we make? What age limits should we reset to make sure that these irrational young adults are not doing jobs they can't handle?

Should we take the right to vote away from under 25s? Should we ban them from the military? Should we stop them from operating motor vehicles? Should we consider them working full-time child labor? Should we put their sex partners in prison because, if under 25s are children then clearly they can't consent to sex, right?

I'm asking a serious question. What is the value of the "under 25s can't make rational decisions" conclusion that you've made? How should society act on that info, if in fact you really believe it? --!!--

The age of consent in Portugal is 14. They don't have any of the theoretical problems you say would happen if we let 17 year olds control their own bodies.

Portugal is not an exception. Plenty of countries respect teens' bodily autonomy. We need no hypotheticals. We have real world examples of low ages of consent working very well.

Bodies and brains never stop changing. The concept of "fully developed" is nonsense.
