All people have lots of irrational feelings. If we want to have a serious discussion about harm, prosecution, and imprisoning people we have a moral obligation to use reason and have a rational discussion.

Some video game players showed addictive behavior. So the general public, as always, thinks A causes B. Therefore video games are addictive, right? Wrong. Scientists know that correlation is not causation.

Why bring this up? Many people cite research done by some Christian Fundamentalists in Utah, which showed that virgins tend to stay married more. They did not show causation. In fact it's exactly like the video game players. A minority have a propensity to X which manifests in multiple ways.

Why do we tolerate assholes openly hating on this demographic?
Sex-negative attitudes now dominate our culture in a way we haven't seen since the 1950s. and it's making (especially) younger generations very unhappy.
There is a group of men who are sexually attracted to 10 year olds but not 15 year olds.
Pedophilia is real.
There are no men who are sexually attracted to 16 year olds but not 20 year olds.
Ephebophilia doesn't exist.
The population doubled over the last 40 years, and is on track to grow by another 50% in the next few decades.

I think this trend toward teens working less contributes a lot to the hate everyone piles on teenagers.
Back in the 80s young adults aged 14-18 socialized with older adults sometimes. Maybe with neighbors, their parents friends, during church or scouting activities, while cheering for a local football team, but mostly at work. Usually in the service industry.
Restaurants, and retail outlets had staff aged 16 to 65. They mixed. They got to know each other. They communicated. They learned from each other. In those days NOBODY had an official mentor. But everybody had half a dozen unofficial ones.

Content moderation is like knives. A lot of people are murdered by knives every year. If your brother was killed with a knife you might have very strong anti-knife feelings.
but the solution is not to outlaw all sharp bladed objects. The concept of the knife (content moderation) is not to blame for the bad things people do with the knife.
Knives are much more often used for good than for evil. They are extremely useful for food preparation, and opening packages, for example.
I've had at least a dozen Twitter accounts suspended. Just yesterday I had a Lemmy account deleted. People try to murder my message with knives all the time.
